MTD & ETOF

The MTD

The Muon Telescope Detector (MTD) is one of the important upgrades to the STAR detector enabling the detection of and online triggering of muons over a large phase space. This, together with the HFT upgrade, will put the STAR detector in an excellent position to measure heavy-flavor hadrons and improve our understanding of the production of such hadrons in the environment of hot nuclear matter.

The MTD construction project involves several institutes from China, India, and the United States. At the time of this workshop, the construction project will enter into its final phase in which the remaining modules are installed and the full system further commissioned in anticipation of the 2014 RHIC heavy-ion run.

The Endcap TOF

The proposed Endcap TOF (ETOF) detectors will enabled the future eSTAR detector to further extend its particle identification capabilities for the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes at the proposed eRHIC. The ETOF will be mounted on both the east and west side poletips of the STAR magnet. On the east side, the ETOF will provide, in combination with a proposed Transition Radiation Detector, and the upgraded TPC, essential (scattered) electron identification. In addition, both the east and west systems will further extend kinematic coverage in Bjorken-x and Q2 range.
